At some time you’re probably going to suffer damage to your vehicle’s windshield. That damage means you’ll need auto glass services, and that immediately raises a number of questions. For example, do I need repair or replacement of my windshield, and what will it cost? Read on, for answers to some of the more common questions about windshield replacement and repair.
How do I know if I need repair or replacement?
The most important factor is the size of the damage. If a chip in the windshield is larger than a quarter, or a crack is longer than a dollar bill, replacement is recommended.
Do I have to take my vehicle to a repair shop?
Not necessarily. Many repair shops offer both in-house and mobile services to keep your inconvenience to a minimum.
How long will the work take?
It depends on the type of work required. Repairs can often be completed in just a few minutes, while replacement might take an hour or more. If the windshield is replaced, the urethane adhesive should dry for at least an hour, and possibly longer, before driving your vehicle. The technician doing the work will tell you the appropriate drive-away time.
What is OEM glass?
OEM stands for Original Equipment Manufacturer, meaning the glass meets the manufacturer’s standards for quality and safety.
Will insurance pay for OEM glass?
You’ve probably paid for OEM glass through your policy. If so, it will pay for windshield service or window replacement with OEM glass. If not, OEM glass can still be installed. You’ll simply have to pay the difference between the cost of OEM and approved aftermarket glass.
What does FMVSS stand for and is it important?
FMVSS stands for Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards. These windshield repair services standards are set by the National Highway Traffic Safety Association for your protection. The only way to meet these standards is to follow the manufacturer’s recommended installation methods. These involve using OEM glass and approved adhesives to prevent your windshield from flying out of your vehicle in an accident.
