No matter how carefully and safely you drive, the odds are that eventually you will suffer some sort of damage to your windshield. It could be a minor ding that can easily be repaired, or it could be something more serious requiring windshield replacement. Hopefully, we can help you determine what to do when you’re faced with this issue.
Repair or replacement, that is the question.
Honestly, we understand that most motorists prefer repair rather than replacement because of the difference in costs. And depending on your insurance coverage, your insurer might cover the entire costs of your repair.
Chips in your windshield are a fairly common occurrence, and most are repairable. As a rule of thumb, if the chip is no more than an inch in diameter and is limited to the top layer of windshield glass, it’s probably repairable.
In a similar fashion, some windshield cracks are also repairable. Again, as a general rule of thumb, if the crack is no more than about 6 inches (the length of a dollar bill), it may be repairable.
In contrast to the rather minor damage described above, we would strongly recommend windshield replacement if:
- The depth of the crack extends more than halfway into the windshield glass.
- The crack extends to the outer edges of the windshield.
- The crack interferes with the driver’s line of sight.
Why Repair and Replacement Are Important
Initially, you may not think it’s such a big deal to drive with a slightly damaged or cracked windshield. In reality in either case, the damage should be corrected as soon as possible.
Minor damage should be fixed to prevent the damage from spreading and leaving you no choice except windshield replacement.
On the other hand, you may not realize that your windshield is part of your vehicle’s airbag system. Consequently, a badly damaged windshield may prevent that safety feature from operating properly. In the case of a serious crash, a malfunctioning airbag system could have disastrous consequences!
